This year’s presidential campaign is very frightening to everyone who is living in this country as permanent residents (or “green card” holders). Why? Because Donald Trump is using language in his race for the Republican nomination that speaks to deporting millions of undocumented people living here, building a wall between the US and Mexico, and referring to Mexicans living here as drug dealers and rapists.
Donald Trump’s harsh and scary words are motivating long time Latino permanent residents to apply for their citizenship for two reasons: first and foremost, citizenship can rarely be taken away (as opposed to a green card which is discretionary); and second, Latinos need citizenship so they can vote in November.
Permanent residents eligible to get citizenship
Mexicans make of the largest sub-group of the over eight million legal US permanent residents eligible to get their citizenship and their rate of naturalization is among the smallest of all immigrant groups. As of the late 1990’s Mexicans have been allowed to hold dual citizenship so there is no longer any reason not to naturalize.
