The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was created in 2012 by the Obama administration to provide temporary relief from deportation and work authorization for certain undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children. To qualify for the program, individuals had to meet specific eligibility criteria, including having arrived in the US before the age of 16, being under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012, having continuously resided in the US since June 15, 2007, and having no serious criminal record. The program allowed beneficiaries to obtain renewable work permits and protection from deportation for a two-year period, which could be renewed as long as they continued to meet the eligibility requirements.
Since its creation, the DACA program has been the subject of significant political and legal controversy. While many have praised the program for providing much-needed relief to young immigrants who have grown up in the US and contribute to society, others have criticized it as an unconstitutional overreach by the executive branch.
