With 2017 wrapping up, many are ending 2017 with new status. In Poughkeepsie, NY, a few finished the year by becoming U.S. Citizens. The 56 new U.S. Citizens were celebrated in the Naturalization Ceremony. Dutchess Count Clerk, Bradford Kendall states, “the ceremony served as a celebration to welcome these new citizens.”
U.S. citizens are granted more liberties and privileges than legal permanent residence. Citizenship provides more opportunities to those who want to peruse an education, government job or business.
Five of the many benefits U.S. citizenship gives is
- Voting Privileges in local and federal levels
- Freedom to Travel with a U.S Passport to allowed areas
- Priority to bring family members to the U.S legally
- Eligible for Federal Grants and scholarships
- Obtain Government benefits
How Do I Start?
The path to Naturalization is a coordinated process that involves eligibility, application and preparedness. Depending on the status and time length of your LPR, you may be eligible to apply. The application is done through form N-400 and a few required documents like driver’s license, birth certificate and ect.
My application is sent, what’s next?
USCIS will send notices to the applicants regarding biometric, interview, results and to take the Oath of Allegiance. To become a U.S. citizen, all eligible applicants must take the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony.
Naturalization holds liberties and privileges than legal permanent residence status. And with the new year starting in a few days, it would be a great time to start the process.
