Form I-9 Explained
What Is Form I-9 Compliance?
Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, is a federal form used to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired to work in the United States. Employers must properly complete and retain Form I-9 for each employee covered by the requirements, including U.S. citizens and noncitizens.
Both employees and employers have responsibilities in the verification process. Employees complete Section 1, while employers or their authorized representatives complete Section 2 by reviewing acceptable documentation within the required timeframe. Additional steps may be necessary when an employee's work authorization requires reverification or when an eligible former employee is rehired.
Understanding these requirements helps employers establish consistent hiring procedures and maintain appropriate employment verification records.
