Replacing your Green Card is a process that can take some time and requires a filing fee, but you have to remember that your permanent resident card is the most important identity document that every foreign national who is granted permanent resident status in America, must hold.
The first thing that you need to do if you lose your Green Card is to report it as missing to the police and to the USCIS and get a copy of the police report as well, in case you need to prove that your card was lost.
The second step is to file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. The USCIS processing time for Green Card renewal or replacement is approximately three to four months.
Also, there are two types of Form I-90 in which you may apply for a replacement green card:
- Online E-Filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (You cannot file your Form I-90 online if you are applying for a fee waiver)
- Filing a paper Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card by mail
If your Form I-90 application is approved, you will be mailed a replacement green card with a 10-year expiration date from the date it is issued.
Remember that you may check the status of your application online at “My Case Status”.
