Westchester County speaks: “Don’t Deport My Mommy”

Westchester County has seen the struggle many immigrants face. The discrimination, separation but also a sign of hope from members of the community. Very few have decided to publicly speak about their refuge from immigration authorities.

One of the few of Westchester County community is Aura Hernandez, a Guatemalan immigrant and a mother. In doing so, she cries a desperate plea for help; help to remain with her children.

Hernandez is a mother of two children, 15-month-old baby and 10-year-old son, Daniel. Her son Daniel is currently staying with his father in Westchester County.

On March 29th, the New Sanctuary Coalition and several church leaders joined in a silent protest. Hernandez’s son Daniel, joined the protest holding a sign that read, “Please, Don’t Deport My Mommy.” They marched until arriving in front of the Trump International Hotel in New York, where they gathered in prayer.

Hernandez fled Guatemala due to an abusive relationship in 2005. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a final order of removal for Hernandez in 2006.

Hernandez sought refuge in a New York City Church, where she continues to stay. ICE has an official policy regarding enforcement actions carried out at sensitive locations such as schools, churches, or public demonstration.
